St Patty's Day :: Shamrock Party of Three

The Shamrock Party of Three
by Melissa

Top O’The Mornin’ To Ya folks.  It’s Melissa O’Newell comin’ atcha from the Emerald Isle…well not really but it got you in the mood, right? With the LONG Winter we are having across the US, I found myself LONGING for the next holiday to celebrate…something to cheer about…make us all smile. What better holiday than St. Patrick’s Day!

It gives me great joy to celebrate with our children. Remember it does not have to be a party of 10 to kick up the heals and do the jig.

Today I bring you The Shamrock Party of Three! (afterall shamrocks have 3 leaves…) I created a simple little tablescape for our children to get them in the St. Patty’s Day mood.

We are really doing well on our “less is more” motto when it comes to sugar.  I have vowed this year not to have a ton of sugary sweets at the party tables anymore.   So far, mission accomplished!

For this party, I decided to mix the dark chocolate (organic, fair trade no less) with some salty pretzels. It fills all the yummy salty and sweet flavors at the same time.  The kids won’t miss the lollipops, candybars, gumballs at all. (watch for the quick tutorial on these cuties)

It was easy to dress up these cellophane bags using the Kids Party Squares from Eye Candy Event Details’ Etsy shop.  After trimming them, I stuck them to a little larger green tag and tied them with some green festive bakers twine to finish off these “goodie bags”.

Some other fun items that the children will be getting….themed tattoos, rainbow rings and some beaded necklaces.

Another way I used these St. Patrick’s Day party squares was to trim them and stick them to green foil cupcake papers (opened up).  I love the way the foil shines with the party squares.

I know the children will appreciate some spring colors in the house and the fun of St. Patrick’s Day!
Until next time – Party On Friends and don’t’ forget to Kiss the Irish!

Change is GOOD :: a NEW NAME

Isn't that the truth. MY dreams ARE scary, but I'm ok with it. And here's ONE of them, I'm sharing with you . . .like right NOW! ;)

Quick, quick announcement!
I just wanted to see how observant you were and see if you even noticed the ever so slight "name change" that happened here on the blog?

It has changed from "Eye Candy Event Details" to the new name of "Eye Candy Creative Studio". . . . .
ahhhhhh . . . doesn't that sound so much better?

I think so, as the reason for the change is simple. I have found that I blog more about what I design, what I am creating, what I am crafting or DIY-ing, what I am making over in my home, much more, than actual events. It all is classified as "eye candy" and it's all done in my "creative studio". It is just a much better name and a much better fit. Period.

What I started out doing years ago is no longer the focus of what I want to do. I want to share with you the "organic" side of me, as I am getting back to my roots . . . what I dearly dearly LOVE with all of my being. Organic art. It's what I went to school for, it's what I get paid to do in my freelance life and it's what I am going to be sharing here with you & what I will be putting my focus in. For the past year, or so I have started back down that road and I am so much happier doing these things that I dearly love again.

Is this change nerve-racking? Is it scary? Heck yeah as I am human and I myself have doubts if I am doing the 'right' thing but I just keep being led in this direction, so this is me following His lead and hoping I wont blow it. ;)

What can you expect? Well, here's the thing, I am pretty much going to be bringing you the same things, meaning I have no plans for anything going away as I still LOVE blogging about craft tips, my DIY crafting fun, weddings, along with recipes I make from time to time. AND of course, I will still continue to offer up FREE printables every month as I enjoy the feedback on them and I know you all love them, so no worries there.

But what will be added is so much more FUN! I will be sharing illustrations, paintings, hand lettering and so much more of the custom items I am doing. I will be blogging about ideas I have for these things and how YOU will get to enjoy my original works of art. I am working with some outside vendors to make this happen and looking forward to sharing it all soon with you.

In the meantime, make sure you are following on Instagram as I share my artwork there when I am working on something new or when I've grabbed some new art supplies to play with. It's also usually the first place I share a peek into something that is coming or a product I will be adding to the new shop. ;)

I have not completely changed everything yet to the new name. I pretty much have only changed the blog name and address here. Look for a new FB page name, you will NOT have to like a new page, I will just merge the new one into the existing one. I also will be changing my other social media names as well if I can get them to match better, if not, they will stay. But know that if you already follow me, you need not do anything as I will be changing everything on my end so it's easy for you. I just wanted to at least make this FORMAL announcement as some people have noticed and I didn't want to keep it from you any longer.

Thanks for being a fan, following me & here's to being creative together . . .

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE for you to let me know what you think of the new name, what you will be curious to see . . . paintings, prints, hand lettering, illustration work . . .or maybe something you want me to keep around . . . what? I am excited to hear what you have to say . . . Please comment below . . .

HOME :: Sneak Peek - Girl's Bedroom Makeover

Today I wanted to share a sneak peek into my daughter's bedroom makeover. I started on it back in the fall but then the holidays hit and it was put on hold for a bit. But now . . . I finally get to start putting the finishing touches on it for this phase. When she turned 10 last year (sniff sniff), I thought it was only appropriate to give her bedroom a makeover as she was getting ready to hit that  . . . that . . . dare I say it? . . . that (whispering) . . . pre-teen phase. (gulp) Anyone else feel time just slipping by with your kid? She's my first and last & boy is it hard to fathom sometimes. This growing up process. (sigh)

So back to the bedroom . . .lol.
This is what we started with . . . the infamous "before" photo . . .

and now it's this gorgeous shade of a light teal.

How did we get here? Well this was our inspiration . . . this comforter set we found on clearance at Target last summer that my daughter fell in love with. It was perfect as it incorporated enough of the colors she loved yet wasn't so overwhelming with colors that it would look a mess once it was in her room.

and then there was the paint swatch that we loved . . . and it just so happens that teal is her favorite color . . . at the moment ;)

So then we got to painting and saying goodbye to the pink & flowers that she had grown up with for the last 9 years  . . .

she had some fun writing out messages . . . this was a fun memory that she & I will always have together. It is so so important to grab these moments when you can, since it seems like they get fewer and far between. I will cherish this time in her life as a very fond memory. =)

The room has been painted, the trim has been transformed from 'yuck' brown to a crisp, clean white. Furniture has been arranged & re-arranged. The final layout is complete and now is in the process of being finalized and decorated. The FUN part is finally here.

We are having a blast tweeking the room to make it perfect for her. I am currently working on a gallery wall for her consisting of works of art from her, myself and things we have purchased - it will be amazing. She is organizing and re-organizing to find the system that is going to work for her. I am hoping to share the FULL bedroom makeover reveal soon, so I hope you stay tuned to check it out.

Have you done any room makeovers lately? Pleas share below and let me know what you have tackled . . .

Recipe :: Double Chocolate Covered Peppermint Popcorn

I have the most amazing POPCORN treat for you today. How often do you follow a recipe on the back of a package? Honestly I don't really notice them or I forget to write it down. BUT that changed and I finally remembered to try one and by am I glad I did! But of course, I have to make it MY own and change it up a bit, so it all turns out amazing and delish, so it's all good. ')
I found the original recipe on the back of this package of Kraft Jet-Puffed peppermint marshmallows around the holidays. I changed it just a little by adding MORE chocolate because hello! . . .who doesn't like MORE chocolate.

Here's the altered recipe:
Double Chocolate Covered Peppermint Popcorn
- prep time: 10 min.
- bake time: 25 min.
Makes: 24 servings of 1/2 cup each
What you need:
- 1/2 tsp. salt divided
- 3 bags of microwave popcorn
- 4 oz. Baker's semi-sweet chocolate
- 1/2 cup (1stick) of butter
- 40-50 Jet-Puffed mini peppermint mallows marshmallows

Make it:
- heat oven to 275 degrees

- sprinkle 1/4 tsp. salt over popcorn in large bowl, toss to coat and set aside.
 - melt chocolate and butter in medium saucepan on low heat, stirring frequently.
- add marshmallows, stir until completely melted. Remove from heat; stir in remaining 1/4 tsp. salt. Pour over popcorn, toss to coat. Spread onto greased baking sheet.
- bake 20-25 minutes or until crisp, stir after 15 minutes.
- cool on wax paper.
- using chocolate melts (chocolate wafers) melt as directed and drizzle over popcorn for added color/flacor
- add any additional candies/sprinkles. (for this we added sixlets and M&Ms)

Doesn't this look amazing? I'm tellin ya, if you are a popcorn lover, you are in soooooo much trouble as this is addicting! So who's gonna make some soon?

Have you made any awesome treats with popcorn?
Let me know what you've tried as I'd love to know . . .

Wedding :: Plum and Mint Inspiration Board

Hello everyone & welcome to "Wedding Wednesday"!

:: flowers  ::  tissue garland  ::  earrings  ::  tie  ::  drink  ::  cake  ::  straws  ::  mason jars

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

This week's theme is all about spring coming. It should be here soon (even though all the snow on the ground here says otherwise) so we can only hope . . .so today we are celebrating plum meets mint & how amazing they look together. I love these two colors together because they can look vibrant and rich together using those deep plums or lighter for a nice casual color palette.

These flowers have so many amazing shades of plum intertwined that make for just the right blend and would be stunning against a white gown, mint bridesmaids dresses or sitting on tables at the reception. Tassel tissue garlands are all the rage right now and make for an inexpensive way to decorate but carry quite an impact around a venue. You can dress up tables, walls, backdrops with these and they make everything well . . .more fun! Your bridesmaids would love these earrings accented in gold which would also make the perfect thank you gift for them. Serving a signature drink is always appreciated by your guests but not all cocktails have to contain alcohol, you can also offer one without, like a colored lemonade using one of the wedding colors. Have your cake make an impact by choosing flavors for the layers that your guests will enjoy and of course, match the wedding colors too. Have a jar of coordinating straws at the bar for your guests to use with their drinks, who doesn't like a festive drink? Need mason jars for your tables? . . . spray paint them in your wedding colors and add flowers for the easiest but stunning, flower arrangements.

Have you ever been to a wedding where they used plum and mint? Did YOU have one or are you planning one? What was your favorite element of the event?  I would LOVE to hear the details . . .spill below ;)
