DIY :: Be-YOU-tiful Framed ART

     

Hello everyone!

If you are a regular follower here on my blog, you will know that I "may" love to hand letter just a little. (wink wink) LOL I get questions from time to time about how to do some of the things I do, so I thought I would start sharing a few tips every now and again with you guys. So today I am going to share how I hand letter on glass as you can make some really cool pieces of art to frame if you give it a little practice. Plus I will share some of the tips that make it easier for me. 

Another thing that I love doing when I am not hand lettering is doing home projects. Yup, I love me some HGTV and watch whenever I can as it always inspires me to brighten up areas of my home or give me the confidence to tackle some major projects. All you can do is try, right? ;)

I am currently giving my daughter's bathroom a complete makeover. I started last weekend and got pretty far. I am at the point where I have to put it back together so she can use it, so that's what I did this weekend but I still need to paint her vanity and put in a new floor before I will be sharing pics here. In the meantime, I have been having fun planning what I will put on her walls. Of course I love to hand letter pieces of art for my home any chance I get and thought today I would share how I made this framed art that I hand lettered on glass for her bathroom makeover.

Since this was for my daughter, choosing something uplifting for her to see every time she is in there getting ready for school was a must. So I decided to use "beYOUtiful" since it holds a double meaning the way it is written: be YOU and of course beautiful spelled differently. Both of which are powerful and positive messages for a thirteen year old to hear as often as possible.




Let's get started so you can see how easy it is to make your own 'BeYOUtiful' framed art . . .

Step 1: Gather all of the supplies. You will need: a wood picture frame, Sharpie markers in various colors to match your decor, paint & paintbrush (I chose to use DecoArt patio paint since it is made for outside, I knew it would hold up in the bathroom), screw hooks, a piece of ribbon and my handy dandy Goo Gone spray gel.

Step 2: Take apart your photo frame and paint the wood frame and edges, set aside until dry. Next take your Goo Gone spray gel and give a couple squirts to that stubborn sticker that the stores always seem to attach with super glue! So frustrating right? Then just wipe off with a clean cloth and you are ready to get to work.

I have always used Goo Gone to tackle all of my sticky messes like this so when I saw it the other day at Target in a spray bottle? Yeah, straight in the cart it went! Heck yeah!

Step 3: The next thing you will want to do is sketch out what you would like to draw on your glass. A couple tips for this step . . . make sure you sketch to the size of your glass as you will be placing this sketch under the glass before you draw. If you are unsure of your lettering or drawing skills, no problem, simply find a piece of art you like and print it out to trace onto your glass.

Step 4: Grab your markers, place your sketch under your glass and start tracing your design onto the glass. Be careful where you grab the edges of the glass as sometimes they are a little sharp when taking them out of the frames. Proceed with caution. ;)

INSIDER TIP TIME:  Whenever I hand letter on glass or a similar surface, I always have the Goo Gone & some q-tips nearby. WHY you ask? Well let me show you . . . see that little marker smear in the photo below? I now do NOT freak out when I accidentally make a mistake or get a smear because I know the Goo Gone spray will take care of it. So much better for my anxiety. lol

It also comes in handy when I need to clean my table. The table where I do all of my painting, crafting, lettering is on my dining room table (a.k.a. 'craft room' every day and it is made out of glass. So as you can imagine, anything that has to do with creating, art or something that involves crafting is bound to get a little messy! That's why I'm so glad I can tackle all of my messes now with Goo Gone in spray bottle form - it's now Good As Gone with Goo Gone! It makes it so I don't have to worry about ruining my table as it gets off paint, markers and so much more.

Step 5: Take your hook screws and screw them into the top of your frame and then tie the ribbon you want to use to it. Place your lettered glass art back in the frame to complete your framed art. (throw away the backing of your photo frame as you don't need it.)

CRAFT :: Welcome Wreath

 

Why hello there! 

I hope you all are enjoying this summer and staying cool as the heat has been crazy hot this year, am I right? I have a little project to share with you for those days when you feel like getting out of the heat to get your 'craft on' and make something fun! Today I am going to share how simple it is to make a cute welcome wreath for your home or front door with just a few supplies!

The nautical trend is big this year so I knew I wanted to incorporate something in that theme for this wreath. On my latest trip to Michaels I found this little sign that looks like a beach sign, which I knew I could hand letter something on, as well as this nautical rope in navy and white that I knew would match so perfectly with my navy door!

After picking up a few supplies I needed to make this wreath, I headed home to get my craft on. . . 

Let's see just how easy it is to make this fun Welcome Wreath:

1. Gather all of your supplies! For this wreath, you will need: paintbrushes, paint in aqua, white & navy, glue gun, flat wreath form, nautical rope in navy and white and mini wood “beach” sign (which I found in unfinished wood aisle).

2. Start by painting the edges and the front of the wreath form white and allow to dry.

Step 3-4: Paint the front of your little welcome sign but do so with watered down white paint so you get more of a ‘weathered’ look on your welcome sign. I painted the edges of the sign in the aqua paint, then allow to dry. Once it’s dry you will want to hand letter the word ‘welcome’ on your sign. You know me as I love to hand letter all of the things!!!! lol I did the aqua paint first and then went in and added the navy as ‘shading’ to give it some dimension and make it pop a little more. Feel free to practice your ‘welcome’ on a scrap piece of paper before painting on your sign. Also you can lightly sketch it out on the sign before you paint it – as that’s what I do! ;)

Step 5: Using your glue gun, attach the rope to your wreath form. You should have enough for it to go around three times.

Step 6: Glue on your welcome sign with a drop or two of glue, off to the side.

Step 7: This step is NOT necessary to do but I like a more ‘finished’ look so I grabbed a piece of ribbon and wrapped and glued it around the area I just glued the welcome sign on so it gives it added ‘staying power’. Plus I think it looks better with it now.

I finished off the wreath by adding a tiny aqua coordinating bow on the welcome sign as well as using that same ribbon for a hanger for your wreath. All done! =)

That is it! You are all done! How cute is this wreath right? I love the way it looks on my front door and makes the perfect wreath for ANY time of the year but I am loving it for summer right now.

CRAFT :: Halloween Eyeball Wreath

Hey everyone! Today I want to share a super easy wreath I made the other night in about 15 minutes! My daughter is having a Halloween party this year and I wanted a new wreath to hang on our front door to greet her guests when they arrive plus I was feeling all crafty and wanted to make something, so a new wreath it was! 

Why purple?  . . . well since the mantel was all decked out in all purple and green this year, it seemed only fitting, plus I have a super cute yard flag out front that has purple as the main color and I needed to balance it all, because it makes me a little crazy when things are not balanced! lol So when the girl and I made our weekly Target trip last week, I looked around for something that would work for my wreath and lucked out in my search! 

Why all the eyeballs? As you can may have noticed if you are a regular here, I am having a moment with eyeballs, after using them when I made my Halloween eyeball garland for the mantel, I had plenty left over, so I decided to use them with my new supplies and I think they made the whole wreath! Hope you like it too, as it turned out more festive than I imagined in my head and that is a good thing! YAY!

This is how to make this quick 'Halloween Eyeball Wreath':

Step 1:
Gather all of the supplies you will need. I still have pool noodles from when I bought a ton of them on clearance, so I used that for my wreath form, but you can obviously use any wreath form you like. I grabbed this black burlap ribbon and these little chalkboard signs in the Dollar Spot at Target. I already had the googly eyes and the purple bead strand and I picked up this black and purple garland while I was in Target and found it back in the Halloween section. I will mention it comes in green as well, if you prefer.

Steps 2-4:
2. Start with the roll of ribbon and hot glue it to the wreath form before you start wrapping to keep it in place. Once you've glued in place, wrap the black ribbon all around the wreath form until you have completely covered it. I will mention I used two rolls of black burlap ribbon for the pool noodle form. When you get to the end glue in place. 

3. Unroll the purple garland and hot glue to the outside edge of the wreath form until you go all the way around.

4. You will also be gluing the purple garland to the front of the wreath form to give it some fullness.

Steps 5-6:
5. For the mini chalkboard sign, I changed out the ribbon for the purple beading so it matched better. 

6. I then tool a few smaller googly eyes and hot glued them in the corners. I grabbed one of my chalk paint pens and wrote 'welcome' on it.

Step 7-8:
7. Take as many googly eyes as you like and randomly hot glue them all around the wreath.

8. The last step is to take a ribbon of your choosing (I used a piece of black zigzag ribbon) to use to hang the wreath.
