HOME :: CHALKBOARD wall in tween room

how to paint a custom chalkboard design, tween room ideas, hot pink
steps to painting a custom chalkboard wall, be the change, girls room

Hello everyone! Today I am finally sharing a special completed project from my daughter's tween bedroom makeover! As you know I have been working on her room and this is one of the requests that she had. She wanted to have a chalkboard wall somewhere in her room when we re-did it so I took the opportunity when she was gone one weekend to get it done and surprise her when she got home. I am not sure if she expected a typical black chalkboard wall, like the one I did on our pantry door, but nothing 'typical' was being done in this girls room! lol I decided to check out what colors were available to use for it and decided on a nice hot pink color. It definitely is anything but 'typical' for this custom chalkboard wall.

I am almost completely done with my daughter's tween room makeover and will be sharing the full reveal here (hopefully) soon as this makeover already seems like it's taken forever. Anyone else feel like that with room makeovers? If you follow me on Instagram, I am always sharing what I am working on at the moment and you may remember seeing a sneak peek of this wall that I did in her room. I LOVE the way it turned out and today I am going to share how I did it, how fairly easy it was and can I just say . . .  she LOVED it! YAY! That's all that really matters right? ;)

Ok, so this is the space I decided would look great putting a chalkboard in. What you are looking at is a small space between her closet doors on the right and the door out of her room. Would I have loved to do a whole chalkboard wall in this color for her? Sure, but the room already had all of the other wall space spoken for so this is what I decided and I think it's perfect as it was long enough plus I didn't want to make it too tall as she couldn't reach high anyway. So let me tell you how I did it. First the before shot . . .

Step 1: I needed to decide on the shape I wanted to make it as I didn't want the typical chalkboard rectangle shape so I opted to mimic a shape that was already in her room just directly across the room next to her window: this vinyl wall decor I did awhile ago:

just be yourself, wallternatives vinyl, inspiration for chalkboard design

Step 2: I grabbed a big piece of tissue paper, a pencil and decided to trace the outline to use as a template for my chalkboard wall design.

Step 3: This is the most important step as you need a way for the outline to go on the wall as an outline. Flip over your tissue paper and heavily color the line with a no. 2 pencil making it thicker than the original line on the opposite side that you traced.

Step 4: Hold up your tissue paper, tape it to the wall, have someone hold it - whatever you need to do to hold it in place and using a pencil trace over the line on the front and it should give you a rough outline transferred to the wall for you to use when you paint this shape in. I purposely darkened this photo below in the hopes that you can see what it should look like.

In the spirit of 'keeping it real' when I went to transfer my shape to the wall, it was too wide for the space. Doh! So I basically ended up free handing most of it and making it work. Gotta do what you gotta do, am I right? ;)

Step 5: Carefully start painting in the outline of your image and then fill in until you have it completed. I usually do 3 coats when I am painting with chalkboard paint but that is my opinion but I am sure you could do less.

Step 6: Make sure to 'season' the chalkboard by using the side of a piece of chalk and rubbing it all over the painted surface of the chalkboard design. But please make sure to follow the directions and wait until the suggested drying time is complete before doing this.

That is it - you now have an amazing chalkboard wall! One thing I did was hung a small shelf under the chalkboard as it does a couple things: 1. it catches a lot of the chalk 'dust' which is a very good thing as that is easier to clean than carpet and 2. it serves as a place to hold the cute tin of chalk that she can use.

So what do you guys think? She absolutely loved it and I love running in her room while she is at school and writing a message to her plus when she has friends over, they love it too!

Have you ever created a chalkboard wall in your home? I would love to know, so comment below as I am wanting to do another area as well and would love to hear what you like. Thanks for reading. xoxo

HOME :: 5 Must Haves for a Tween Bathroom

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #FoamSensations #CollectiveBias

Today I am sharing a peek into another HOME project that I have in the works that I hope to be sharing with you soon. I am currently in the beginning planning stages of making over my daughter's bathroom and giving it a tween makeover! Her bedroom received a makeover a little over a year ago and she loved helping me pick out things and having a voice into what we did. I thought it would be fun to do the same and give her a tween bathroom!

She will be turning TWELVE next month (I can't even believe it) and she is in LOVE with teals and blues, like A LOT!!!! You will see those colors in her bedroom reveal as well, that I am (still) working on, so I was not surprised when she picked this color scheme for her bathroom. Like I mentioned we are in the beginning planning stages . . . meaning we have started shopping for things because hellooooooo, that's the FUN part and we've talked about what we are going to do, like paint her sink cabinets this super awesome color of teal BUT we haven't actually done any of the work yet. LOL No worries though as I have some time carved out soon to work on this project and when it's finished, since all of the shopping is pretty much done, it will get used quicker! We'll eventually get there and when we do, it's gonna rock! ;)

In the meantime, I thought I would share my TOP 5 must haves for making over a tween bathroom! Can a lot of these tips be used on ANY bathroom? Sure these will be specific to hers but they can help in any old bathroom! Hope you find a tip for your next makeover! ;)

1. Amazing towels
Who doesn't love getting brand new towels? I mean they are sooooooo soft and fluffy, so when we ran across these on sale, we went ahead and snatched them up. One tip that I have always done in her bathroom that I love, is finding ONE patterned towel and then matching up solid colors with it, like we did here with this chevron printed towel that she HAD to have! Just grab a patterned one that you love and then coordinate matching colors from it and it will give you some variety in their bathroom that will keep it anything but boring! (wink)

2. Storage
My daughter LOVES to organize items and I am pretty sure I can see a future with her blogging about it (kidding, not kidding?) so I am pretty sure that choosing storage items to fit what she needed was her favorite. Make sure to pick up storage in all sizes. This set of three blue baskets we found are nice and soft, so storing extra washcloths, towels and essentials that she needs everyday fit into them perfectly. Plus they are pretty to look at too so if you have the counter space to leave some out, do it! If not, under the sink they go to do their job! Try to find some smaller baskets too. We found these cute wire baskets in the dollar section of a store we were in the other day and they work so good for holding those hair ties, lip gloss and those bazillion bobby pins.

3. Soap
We love soap. We buy a lot of soap. Both my daughter and I have a slight obsession with it. BUT we are picky about what we use, meaning if it doesn't smell good, it stays at the store! We are always on the lookout for a fun scent and we love foaming soap too, there is just something about it that feels good when washing your hands, so when we found these new Softsoap scents on our latest trip to Walmart, we were pretty excited! Plus we NEEDED to get new soap for the bathroom and did you notice how these will match her color scheme perfectly? Hmmm hmmm . . . love them. The best part is, this Softsoap Liquid Foaming Hand Soap is a premium product at a great price. And the smell. I mean these scents are perfect for the bathroom: whipped cocoa butter and jasmine and white cotton.

4. Artwork
I must say that the artwork for a room makeover is MY favorite item to shop for. I love seeing what I can find that will fit perfectly in the space. I decided that I am going to do a small wall gallery in her bathroom and I wanted to find inspirational pieces that will uplift her as she is getting ready for school every day and make her feel good. I believe that artwork must do a couple things: match your room, make you happy looking at it, be well designed and be a little different. If it does those things, then it IS worth purchasing. Of course all of the artwork was approved by the girl, she loved what I found. YAY!

5. Extra touches
For my daughter's bathroom, the extra touches would be items that a 'mom' thinks is needed to complete the space. Those extra touches that make the bathroom functional or safe or add that final piece to make it feel good when you walk in.

A new bathmat so she doesn't slip because 'safety first'!!!!!! (wink) A new bath towel wrap for her to pamper herself with because ever since I introduced her to these she loves using them. And of course a bathroom is NOT complete without some sweet little flowers added by the sink or perhaps on a shelf!

Hope you enjoyed seeing a peek into the beginning stage of her bathroom makeover! I have other things planned that I will save for the reveal but it's always fun to share along the way!

By no means was my daughter the ONLY one to get something new and fun the other day . . .I made sure to pick up a new soap for me because I love soap too remember. Plus it's for the kitchen so it doesn't count as a gift, just something we 'needed'. ;)
