RECIPE :: Earth Day Chocolate Bars

earth day, april 22, ethically sourced, chocoalte package, how to make

Earth Day Chocolate Bars

Earth Day Chocolate Bars

April 22 is Earth Day around the world and every year I find a few activities and recipes to celebrate the day with my daughters. Last year we started seedlings for vegetables and made a vegetarian dinner. This year, I am making them a treat to celebrate, recognize and teach the importance of thinking about our impact on our planet.

One cause that is close to my heart is ethically sourced chocolate. Earth Day is a great opportunity to buy good quality chocolate and talk about why ethically sourced chocolate matters to the planet. From growing practices, harvesting, and processing, chocolate can have a significant impact on people's lives. Chocolate is also one of the most traded commodities in the world so I believe that every time we purchase organic Fair Trade chocolate we are making a difference.

I use organic Fair Trade chocolate in all of my products and home baking. I bought some delicious dark chocolate pistoles (melting chocolate) and used a well-loved chocolate bar mould that I have, and whipped up some chocolate bars for gifts. This is easy, fun and the results are delightful.

Recipe for Chocolate Bars

Using chocolate or candy moulds is the easiest way to make chocolate treats. All you need is a mould (available at craft stores and kitchen supply stores, or online) and good quality chocolate.

Temper your chocolate according to the package- each brand has a different temperature that is best for melting. You can also find this information online.

The method of tempering chocolate is that you melt it, bringing it to a desired temperature, and then cool it down slightly before pouring it in the mould. This allows the chocolate to set at room temperature and stay set, rather than needing to refridgerate it.

Do not use chocolate chips. Try to find couveture chocolate, pistoles, or a block of good quality baking chocolate. Many gourmet food stores carry a variety of these with many options for organic and Fair Trade.

Once your chocolate is melted pour into mould. The plastic one I have used here does not need to be prepped, simply pour the chocolate in and allow to sit at room temperature until set through. Ensure it is kept from heat and sunlight.

Pop the chocolate bars out and you are ready to wrap and give. You could also add flavourings such as spices, nuts, or dried fruit when the chocolate is melted to create a variety of chocolate bars.

Enjoy this treat and have a great Earth Day!

Guest Contributor: Kimberley Mulla

My Mom gave me my first cookbook when I was six years old. I have been baking & cooking ever since.

I specialize in artisan marshmallows & confections. I want to sell a product that I would feed my children. The ingredients are simple, often local, organic & fair trade as well.

I love making marshmallows. Every single one. It brings me so much joy to create something unique, tasty, and delightful.

{SNEAK PEEK} Daughter's Birthday Party Theme

I can NOT even believe I am sharing my daughter's birthday theme for this year already! Time sure does fly BUT I am so excited to FINALLY be able to share the theme with all of you!

The theme is a "Rainbow Loom Birthday Party".

. . .but seriously . . . did you SEE what that says on the invite??? Ya know that part that says "11th birthday"? (sigh)

She just LOVES rainbows right now & has for awhile but I didn't want to design a "traditional" rainbow party. So she suggested adding the ever-popular "rainbow loom" to it since she wanted to invite all her friends & their looms so they can make all of these advanced projects she has been researching & making! To say she is obsessed is an understatement. ;)

I think it's amazing just HOW MANY "rainbow-type" parties are being planned all over the party world right now too. I think it's crazy how all of our daughters seem to be wanting any kind of "rainbow" party for their birthdays this year.

This party will have a LOT of white. Right here, in these pics, is probably the most color you will see together. I am planning a mostly WHITE color palette with pops of color. No actual rainbows. Think more of a confetti rainbow "feel".

Ya know what else is amazing? When your favorite store (Target) has these amazing party items in the stores that just so happen to match a party you are throwing at the exact time you need them. Can I get a 'Heck Yeah!"

One other thing that I am going to "try" and do this time around, is a more SIMPLE party. I am making all of the desserts myself and cutting back on the dessert table. You will see more healthy alternatives plus some fun items that are perfect dessert items for this party.

The invites just went out a couple days ago but it's all good.
It will be amazing this year as my daughter is helping in so many areas this time around . . .crafting, menu items, designs, activities . . . it's GREAT to see her doing this and knowing what she wants! LOVE it.

I am so thankful for a few vendor friends that are helping me with this party. I knew I would not have a whole lot of time to plan and get things done as I will just be getting back from a blogging conference and only have a week to finish up everything. So this momma will be a mad woman in about a week & a half getting everything done. But I wouldn't have it any other way as the memories are what makes it all worth it. =)

I will be posting sneak peeks on Instagram if you want to follow along & see the mad rush to get all the crafts I am making done plus all the mayhem . . .I mean FUN, of the next week or so! ;)

I will have this collection in the shop soon but if you cant wait, just email me as I know the designer & can probably hook ya up! ;)

So what do you think of the theme? I would love to hear from you, leave a comment below please! Have you ever thrown a rainbow theme party?

WEDDING :: My BEACH wedding as Inspiration Board

Hello everyone & welcome to a special edition to "Wedding Wednesday"!
Today I celebrate another FOUR year anniversary. I say "another" as you could say I had 2 ceremonies. One here at home with our families and friends and then the second on the beach while on our honeymoon. It's what we wanted so that's what we did. Enjoy!

beach ceremony, beach wedding, sunset ceremony, modern wedding

My bouquet I made myself. Picked up flowers, ribbon & floral supplies at a local grocery store & designed my bouquet plus a couple boutonnieres.

The lobby of the resort we stayed at had this amazing lobby with lots of modern designs & furniture. We took advantage of it.

Walking off into the sunset. Happily married (again).

Sealed with a kiss.

Destin had this private park, at Henderson Beach, across from our resort, which was perfect to hold the ceremony.

Walking the beach with my husband. In and out of the water. We had fun.

Our wedding attire. I love my dress so much I want to wear it again. ;)

Our LOVE.

Walking through the lobby to go to the ceremony.

Want to see more of my wedding festivities? You can see another post about my beach wedding here. For my actual wedding day you can find a sneak peek heremy wedding details here, and then an inspiration board using my wedding day.

Happy "beach" anniversary to my husband. I can't wait to go back soon.

I love you. xoxo
